On Friday, your Rocks traveled to Carmel to face the Greyhounds for their second non-conference contest of the season, falling 10-34. The loss evens the varsity record at 1-1. The Rocks started on offense, but quickly punted the ball away. Carmel had better luck, pushing into field goal range before the Rock D stiffened. Westfield was unable to answer the Greyhound field goal though the teams traded a pair of punts. Carmel then put together a long drive that resulted in a score, widening their lead to 10-0 at the end of the first quarter. The Rocks couldn’t get anything going in the second quarter, and Carmel hung another 10 points on the scoreboard. Westfield had one promising drive near the end of the half that ran out of time, and they tried for a 46 yard field goal, but it was no good. The first half was all Carmel, who took a 20-0 lead into the break. Westfield started the second half on D, and forced a quick fumble to snag some momentum. Olumide Fapetu punched the ball out, and Alex Macdonald recovered. The Rocks would settle for a Diego Herrera field goal to get on the board. The Rock D then produced another stop, but despite some sparks of life, Westfield’s drive resulted in another punt. Logan Loring then intercepted a deep Carmel pass, and the Rocks again looked to gain some momentum from the timely takeaway. The offense executed a slick double pass, and Nick Fero found Andrew Noble for the score (Herrera kick). The Rock D stopped Carmel, and Westfield began marching again. They would head into the fourth quarter down 10-20 to the Hounds, but threatening to score. Early in the fourth, however, Carmel intercepted a Shamrock pass in the end zone, ending the scoring threat. The Greyhounds would go on to tack on two more scores to seal things away before taking a knee. 34-10 Carmel was the final. Your Rocks will return to action next week when they start the rivalry portion of their schedule in Zionsville facing the Eagles. The Shining Star Trophy will be on the line, along with conference standing. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm.
