The Westfield boys track and field competed at the IHSAA State Championships Friday, scoring in three events, and finishing 19th of the 68 teams that scored points in the meet, capping off a historic season where many school records were broken, and many old barriers were overcome. A sectional championship, the largest contingent of athletes at the state meet in team history, and unprecedented achievement in many events were all part of the Rocks story in 2025. On Friday, however, Will Snedeker, in his last meet as a Shamrock, stood out, scoring in two events, and adding a surprising upset in one of them. The meet started with the 4x800 of Maxim Poirier, Caleb Haney, Ty Conner, and Snedeker breaking the school record by 3 seconds, running a blistering 7:42.70. They finished 4th in the meet in the 30th best time run in the nation this year. That time would have won 18 of the last 30 state meets, but this event, unusually strong in the state this year, was unbelievably competitive. Three of the Westfield's athletes, Snedeker, Poirier, and Conner were running in their last ever meet for Westfield, and they went out with a bang. Another relay, the 4x100, featured a decidedly younger quartet. Maison McCray and Caleb Terril, the first two legs, are both sophomores, and Cayden Gearhart and Cato June, the 3rd leg and anchor are juniors. All 4 of them are running through injury, but refused to miss the state meet. Regardless of their pain, the relay ran a very solid 42.11. While that's well off the 41.59 school record they set while healthy, that was still good enough for a 7th place finish in the state, in a very gutty performance. The final scorer for the Shamrocks was one of the real surprises of the meet. Will Snedeker came from behind to win the "slow heat" of the 800. The fast heat became tactical, and when the smoke cleared, Sned's 1:54.24 stood as the 5th best time in the timed final, winning him his 2nd medal of the day. Other athletes competing in the meet included Job Mavrick (who has competed in state championships in 3 sports this year) in the discus, Alex Wilson in the pole vault, Logan Tuck in the 110 hurdles, Cato June in the 100 dash, and the 4x400 relay of Maxim Poirier, Caleb Haney, Ryd Wallerstedt, and, again, Will Snedeker. Special recognition to Carson Ackley, Ridge Wallerstedt, Kade Johnson, and Luke Moulder, all of whom competed in one of the relays during the post season and helped these relays get to the state meet. Kade and Ridge in particular are notable because they had to fill in at the Regional at the last moment. Finally, congratulations to our Academic All State honorees, Braeden Dewes, Owen Mohler, Charlie Naas, Maxim Poirier, Will Snedeker, and Logan Tuck, and the three academic honorable mentions, Caleb Haney, Austin Scheerer, and Alex Wilson. The Rocks are back in action next March 7, 2026 at Indiana Wesleyan University for an HSR qualifier.
